Why Give Wedding Favours?

By Emily Tanner | Jan 22, 2010

Through many generations, the giving of wedding favours is one of those important traditions which has permeated across wedding ceremonies regardless of class or continent. Originating largely from Europe, the tradition of giving favours at a wedding is something that remains important today.

Despite cultural and national variations, wedding favours are largely known as small gifts which are given to thank wedding guests for attending your wedding. Some of the first ever wedding favours that were given by brides were 5 sugared almonds presented in a small dishes and this remains the most popular type of wedding favour today.

Today, however, brides generally present their almonds in co-ordinating boxes, in organza bags or gathered in tulle nets. 5 Sugared almonds presented in nets and secured with ribbon are known as bomboniere and remain a common choice in many countries around the world. Bomboniere remain the most popular choice of favour at Christenings and Baptisms.

It is believed that 5 sugared almonds are given because each one is said to symbolise the five wedding wishes of health, wealth, fertility, happiness and longevity. As guests enjoy their favours, it is believed that they are wishing the happy couple all of the above throughout their married lives.

Although the continuing popularity of sugared almonds cannot be denied, more antiquated traditions are making way for modern and trendy favours. Today’s brides wish to be in keeping with history by giving their guests 5 pieces of confectionery though these may now be in the form of chocolate hearts, dragees, mints or even home made fudge.

Personalised wedding favours are also growing in popularity. Couples are enticed by favours that display their names and wedding date or venue. Such favours may come in the form of personalised lip balms, personalised chocolate bars or boxes tied with personalised ribbon.

Lastly, keepsake favours are a quirky way of bringing some fun to your tables and make great talking points for your guests. With so many wedding favours on the market, there is bound to be a keepsake favour to suit your exacting requirement - whether you are looking for a bottle stopper, a special candle favour or a crystal favour. These alternative favours are ideal as a practical gift that guests can enjoy using long after your special day has passed.

Whichever wedding favour you think is right for you, remember that tradition states that the bride should hand-make all of her favours by herself. Don’t forget to factor this time in your wedding planning schedule and if you really can’t fit it in, you could always cheat! Ask a member of the bridal party to prepare your wedding favours or consult a company who can undertake all the work on your behalf.
