The power of giving is giving someone a new take on life. For instance, a life of constantly catching the bus or train is now transformed in to a life of weaving in and out of traffic. Show me someone who will not fold like a house of cards when presented with a brand new car and I will show you someone who has been crushed by years of repeated failure and wrecked dreams. And yet, said person will still crack a smile, I bet. Never, ever, underestimate the power of a great gift.
The problem with giving great gifts is not the giving, but the collecting. That’s right: everyone has to chip in, otherwise, whats the point? A great new laptop or new car is not the gift a handful of people pitching in $10 typically buys. The target is in sight — great. That’s half the battle right there. Now, you need to rack your brain and come up with a list of people who either like this person or are obligated to him or her something for the occasion, namely family. With the list in hand, get everyones email address and get to a spiffy new online gifting service. I know this may seem so very strange to you, but go with it.

You can sip your latte and pretend to read MOBY DICK while your gift target’s friend and family grumble at having to give. Or they could be really nice people and be pitching in enthusiastically. In the end everyone wins with the gift giving over the Internet. No one’s feelings get hurt and should you not raise enough dough to make the dream come true, the lucky stiff still gets a Visa gift card. You can’t beat that. I wish I had a gift card right about now, especially with the iPhone out.
