Being engaged can be a fabulous time. It is a time where you are usually at your happiest. However, during this time you realize that you need to start planning your wedding and soon! This article addresses the things you should do first.
The first thing you probably want to do is tell the people closest to you. You can do this in a number of ways. If possible the parents should be told in person. Once both sets of parents know of the engagement you can think about telling everyone else. You can do several things including having an engagement party, sending out traditional engagement announcements, announcing your engagement in the local newspaper or creating a wedding website.
Another thing you are going to address immediately is the guest list. The guest list is one of the most important things that need to be decided. How many guests there will be effect the wedding budget (from how large your ceremony or reception is, to how many slices of cake you need or how many favors you will have to buy). This is a wedding planning item which you and your fianc will have to discuss together as well as asking for input from the parents.
At the same time you and your fianc really need to sit down and discuss the wedding budget. The wedding budget is probably one of the least fun tasks in wedding planning to tackle but it is one of the most important ones. You need to figure out a dollar amount in which to keep the budget within as well as figuring out if you are paying for the wedding yourself or if family will be helping.
When you are done with the budget it is time to sit down together and discuss the wedding. You should talk about what each of you wants or expects. You may be surprised to find out that it may differ drastically. That is okay, the earlier you do this the more time you will have to compromise of what is important to each of you.
Lastly you are going to have to choose the wedding date, the ceremony location and the reception location. People usually choose these three things together because you want locations which are relatively close to each other and ones which will fit into your wedding theme or feeling. Both locations need to be available on the same date.
The above are all examples of major wedding planning decisions. We did not discuss many things that you may be looking forward to such as picking out the dress, flowers or decorations. But there will be plenty of time for that later. What is important now is to get the big decisions out of the way so the rest of the wedding will be easier to plan.
