What to do about the symptoms of stress

By Dr. T. Seimens | Nov 7, 2008

Symptoms of stress have been around for thousands of years, affecting people differently.

Symptoms of stress can broadly be categorized into three classes: In most cases, stressed people experience a combination of symptoms from these three categories: psychological, physical and/or emotional.

People that are stressed usually exhibit hostility, nervousness, forgetfulness, loss of concentration, poor judgment, are disorganized, have fuzzy perception, are confused, have lack of interest, make math errors, live a fantasy life and use negative self-talk.

Stress is everywhere. Frequently, it appears disguised as other things so we don’t believe we are stressed out.

The more dramatic the source of the stress, the deeper we bury it and the longer it will take to rear its ugly head. People sometimes suffer intense stress and take months or longer to show the signs.

Psychological impacts like depression, apathy and unstoppable anxiety are very common symptoms of stress.

Health effects of stress that are left untreated can play a role in circulatory diseases such as coronary heart disease, sudden cardiac death and strokes. Problems accumulate quickly when stress is constant.

If you feel like there is no way out of your job which burdens you with fear of loss or by putting incredible demands on you, you are one of many. Jobs are the number one cause of stress.

Feeling overwhelmed by the demands life makes on you, feeling as if you cannot control life’s events, these all gang up on you to increase stress.

You are probably suffering from severe stress if you are experiencing memory or concentration problems, insomnia or broken sleep.

Recognize common stress symptoms – then take steps to manage them. Recognize the triggers or stresors in your life. Relaxation techniques like meditation are another great option for relieving stress.

Avoid stimulants like caffeine and foods high in sugar as these all increase anxiety and give the body temporary “highs” only to be followed by periods of fatigue.

Different people react differently to stress so there is no clear cut action to take. Get help and slowly start to clear the causes of stress from your life. Progress may be slow but it has a snow ball rolling downhill effect to it.
