What It Takes To Save My Marriage

By Stanley F. Barett | Jul 1, 2009

You made vows to stick together regardless of sickness or health, for the rest of your lives. Yet, now you’re facing tough times and you no longer want to be together until the end. Perhaps, you’re asking, how do I save my marriage. In other words, what can you do to fix a marriage that may be broken? There is probably some reason for this sad development. Consider some of the following issues.

The most common reason why a marriage eventually fails is a breakdown of communication. The common group is those married couples that have grown complacent over the course of their relationship. They’ve either stopped talking or never had serious conversations at all. Perhaps, work or other duties have robbed them of the opportunity to talk. Another aspect may be that you’re taking your spouse for granted. Civility and common courtesy often fade from the relationship.

Complacency is a relationship killer and your relationship with your spouse can be the unfortunate victim. Familiarity with your spouse often removes the spice of your relationship. You’ve stopped trying to find ways to draw the other’s attention or make yourself attractive for them. This is why it is so important to spent the time nurturing your relationship and actively pushing away complacency.

Emotional distance is another result that can damage a marriage. As your relationship struggles, it easy to ignore your spouse despite living with them. Emotionally speaking, that vital connection begins to fray. Physical and emotional intimacy are essential in a strong marriage. Watch out for the warning signs, because they may start out as simple things that are ignored and not taken seriously.

Viewed from outside, it is often easy to notice when some other couple goes from being intimate, laughing, and enjoying one another to withdrawn and cold. When someone mentions something about your marriage however, you may say, why save my marriage when there’s not a problem. Even if you believe something is wrong, you still may have no idea why it happened. The words “save my marriage” may be on your lips but you might have to seek outside help to do it. You should uncover what created the distance between the two of you. You do this by talking again and interacting with your spouse. This step is necessary and unavoidable.

Here’s the pivotal question: How do I save my marriage? Communication, open and honest communication is the answer. Just taking the time to talk and to listen to your spouse again provides a great source of healing. For those who say, why save my marriage in the first place, it could be there are other issues that need to be addressed. It may be that you really want to give up. It may be that you lack the motivation to make changes so you’d rather just part ways with your spouse. In such cases, complacency has won out.

No matter the situation you find yourself in, you should have some idea that rescuing your marriage is a daunting prospect. Should be prepared to say, save my marriage, then also be ready to accept the costs involved. The cost will mean your willingness to communicate, sacrifice, be trustworthy, be honest, and be a companion to your spouse. When you accept the challenge, you should take your time with the process, moving step-by-step. It is the best way to build up your marriage for the future.
