Wedding Photography: Choosing the Photographer

By Vivienne Carsidy | Feb 16, 2009

Choosing the right wedding photography is extremely important if you want to have an accurate record of one of the biggest days in your life. After all, your photographer is responsible for capturing all those special moments and one of a kind expressions.

Because of this, it’s incredibly important to make sure you’re working with an experience photographer with a good knowledge of weddings in particular. Sure, you might pay less for an amateur, but photography is one area where you get what you pay for.

Since your wedding is one of the most important celebrations you’ll ever experience, you need to make sure that the photography is top of the line. These photos don’t have an option to do them over if you don’t like them, so they have to be just right the first time.

Weddings are once in a lifetime events for every couple. Your wedding photographer must be able to give you a guarantee that your photography will be a success.

How do you do that and what should you look for? Your photographer must have experience, but that’s not all you should ask for if you want someone to take the very best photographs of your big day.

One big secret to taking perfect wedding pictures is knowing about people and understanding their values as individuals. After all, no matter how large or small the photographer, no one will succeed in finding what’s special about your wedding if they treat your celebration as an assembly line process.

There are many different types of weddings out there, from religious ceremonies for every faith to civil ceremonies. Your wedding might be small or large, casual or fancy, themed or not.

Traditional weddings and contemporary ceremonies alike must be understood by your photographer. He or she has to be able to shift style to match the event, no matter what it’s like. Wedding photography should be done with a strong understanding of what’s special about your particular event.

To make sure you’re getting the right images, talk to your photographer well in advance and discuss what you want out of your photography. If you’re not comfortable with what’s being offered, you don’t have to go through with any of it.

It’s okay to choose a new photographer – just make sure that you start talking about pictures early enough to keep this from being urgent. You’ll want to have a good rapport with your wedding photographer and be on the same page to get good pictures.

Just remember that you do need to work with your photographer instead of against him or her. Your wedding photographer should have a lot of experience working at weddings and will be able to make recommendations that might help you. You don’t have to agree with everything, but do remember to listen.

For most of us, our wedding photography is extremely important. After all, we want a chance of capturing those beautiful memories. Take the time to pick someone who understand what you need, and your chances of getting the right photos go way up.
