
Check Eye Movement When a person fails to make eye contact, it may be an indication that they are uncomfortable. A brief glance away or at the floor is a mental escape mechanism.
Some honest people have difficulty keeping eye contact so bank your observation and their natural behavior first to establish a baseline to avoid error. If you ask a right handed person to visually recollect what they did and their eyes shifted up and to the right they are attempting to check recall and that is an indication of imagination and an indication they are lying. Up and to the left, that right handed person is likely telling the truth. Auditory remembering has the person telling the lie moving his/her eyes to the right in a horizontal plane to imagine the recall of a sound. (note: this is opposite for left-handed persons.) Check and look for dilated pupils and a rise in the vocal pitch in the liar.
Factoring In Stress and Gestures A person lying, unless they are a professional liar such as some politicians and even they have tell-tale signs, will display some stress. Check for delays in mannerisms as well as coordination of expressions with their words. They may demonstrate timing delays and even freeze up. Does your suspect appear to be shaking their legs or pressing their legs close together? Check for them tightly squeezing their hands and or thighs close together. In the discomfort of a lie, suspects tend to dry up. Check for rapid eye blinking and lip licking attempts to restore lubrication.
Check for the fake smile display. A real smile involves the lower jaw dropping, eye muscles and more face muscles. A fake smile generally involves only the mouth muscles. Small micro-expressions flare up in an instant and are very important to note. These are very accurate indications and virtually impossible to conceal.
Reactions To Confrontation Interactions When confronted, a guilty party may take an unnatural pause as they think up an excuse for their behavior. They will likely get defensive. An innocent person when accused usually gets offensive. They many try and fake familiarity by touching, patting on the back or the fake smile routine. Check to see if they are nervous or fidgety, perspiring unnecessarily.
If you ask a person to repeat the story, a good liar will have no trouble repeating it whereas an inexperienced liar will make up new conflicting parts. Check for palms up positions as it is a submissive gesture indicating they want to be believed. Sometime your suspect may boldly try to touch and get closer to your personage, slap your back or fake familiarity by touching you or giving the fake smile. By keeping notes bank these check marks on behavior in a notepad. That way you’ll have them for later reference checks.
Verbal Content and Context Check for use contractions in defense like: “I didn’t do it” instead of “I did NOT do it.” Will be more likely to use your words i.e.: “Did you steal my iPod and money out of my wallet?” That liar might answer:”No, I did not steal your iPod and money out of your wallet.” The liar might add unnecessary detail to try and convince you that they did not do it The liar might leave out personal pronouns and instead use third-person pronouns such as “you, we, they” in an effort to create distance between themselves and the lie. They might speak monotonously, be soft spoken, even garbled. Their stories might lack detail.
An honest person will backtrack to fill in missing pieces to a story, whereas a liar will be reluctant to do so since it will seem to him, unconsciously, that he/she is admitting to a mistake. A truth-teller fears no questions and liars tend to give short or one-word responses to questions. A honest person will be more likely to get offensive when confronted. A liar will generally get defensive. Take note of your observations by recording them. This bank check of details will prove important later as you compile your assessment.

Behavioral indicators you checked and noted are good indicators. Check your intuition since most people have good built-in lie detector mechanisms in place.
If you feel they are lying, the probably are. But have evidence to back up your hunch. Always let the person talk. The more they talk the more likely you’ll catch them if they are lying.
