Need Help Picking Music For Your Wedding Reception?

By Dan Mezalone | Oct 30, 2009

Weddings require a lot of decisions. One of the numerous decisions that you will spend a great deal of time on when preparing for your wedding day is what wedding songs to play. You will spend more time deciding on which music to play than you will when deciding which wedding favor ideas to provide for your guests. You will need to pick the music for the ceremony as well as the songs for the reception. It sounds fairly simple, but wait until you have to do it.

For the ceremony in church or wherever you might exchange vows, you will probably be limited as to which songs you can choose from. If you are hiring a musician then you can only choose from the music that they can actually play. A church organist or classical guitarist might only know the most popular classical music arrangements.

Do you have any friends that sing really well? If you have somebody in your family or even a friend who is an excellent performer then that is something to consider. In a situation like that, you may be able to get some customized music that is very special for your big day.

Wedding participants wear tuxedos for a reason. For a lot of people, their wedding ceremony is the only truly black tie party they will ever host throughout their lives. Remember that when selecting your songs. This is why people choose the most beautiful and elegant classical music pieces for their ceremony like Beethoven. Just about any piece of classical music that is played primarily with string instruments or a quartet is going to be absolutely beautiful. When you play music that beautiful it really sets the right mood for exchanging vows.

Wedding receptions are a little different. When it is time for the reception to start, you may want to change the pace of music. For that you may want to lighten things up a bit and lose just a little bit of the formality. One way to accomplish this is by playing nice dinner music. The best type of music I could advise would be from Frank Sinatra or anything from that time period. That kind of music reminds people of a time when people stated to really enjoy life.

Another change can happen once everyone finishes with their meal. It is time to play the love songs that get everyone else moving. You need to shake things up by playing some slow paced love songs as well as a few back to back rounds of faster dancing music. You want to cover the generations too. That way you get the grandparents and older more experienced dancers out there. You may be shocked to find out that they are the only guests at the wedding reception who really know how to dance well. Dancing has become a lost art.

If you are hiring a real professional to provide the music for the wedding reception then they should already know what to do. Hire someone with plenty of wedding experience. They will have a decent understanding of what kinds of things get people going at weddings.

Dan has published countless articles to help people plan their weddings. You can find more specific information online about his latest project of helping people decide between many different wedding favor ideas for their wedding reception.
