Of all the problems a relationship can have it is those of a sexual nature that often affect couple the most and in particular, male impotence. Sometimes this can go for many months or even years but eventually, no matter how strong the relationship is, if the problem is not dealt with it could destroy the relationship. Although there could be many underlying reasons for the male impotence, most of the time something can be done to correct the situation.
Male impotence, or erectile dysfunction, is the inability to maintain an erection for a long enough time to have sex. A number of erectile dysfunction situations actually exist; where the man can get an erection sometimes, where it only lasts for brief periods or where it is not possible to obtain an erection at all. Approximately 10 to 15 million American men suffer from some form of impotence but the good news is that it is easy to understand and can be treated in all age groups.
An erection is possible because the penis is made up of many thousands of blood vessels that enter a mass of absorbent tissue with an amount of muscle attached. When a man is sexually stimulated through touch or mentally, nerve signals trigger a flow of blood from arteries into the spongy tissue in the penis. The result of this flow of blood into the absorbent tissue of the penis is an erection which when finished will become flaccid again as the muscles in the penis contract making the blood leave.
Often, if the signals to the nerves are blocked then blood will not flow into the penis thereby creating impotence. In most male impotence situations the underlying reason for the problem is because of a situation like being an alcoholic or a condition like diabetes for example.
Surgery or injuries to the bladder, prostate or male urethra may cause nerve damage and cardiovascular disease or other diseases of the blood vessels may interfere with blood flow. The nerves can also respond adversely to conditions that may create severe stress or psychological conditions that will cause erectile dysfunctionIf man is under huge amounts of stress, this too can affect his ability to obtain an erection.
The most important step a man can take is to make an appointment to see his doctor who should be able to locate the problem and help with treating it. Men that are getting older start to change their lifestyles, becoming more sedentary and put on weight while still smoking, all of which can contribute to male impotence.
