Make Sure You Get What You Want From Your Destination Wedding Photography

By Devin Zuberg | Dec 22, 2009

When you’ve made the decision to hold your wedding at a far away land you will be filled with excitement but also with anxiety as there are a lot of things you will have to think about. One of them will be planning your Destination Wedding Photography.

The biggest problem is that you will not be able to meet your photographer personally and you will not be able to personally interview the options face to face but you do need to stay involved in the process to make sure that you will be working with a person that you click with and that will give you what you are looking for on your big day.

You have two initial options when it comes to choosing a photographer. You can either go with someone local to your destination or you can go with someone from your home town. It is important to investigate both options and get the best deal for you.

If your chosen location is so remote and does not have reliable photographers then you can always fly in a recommended photographer from home. This way you can meet with them in person and see their portfolio up close. You will need to factor this into your budget however as you will more than likely have to include the photographer’s flights and accommodation in their price. If they need an assistant then you may have to cover that too. You also need to ask if they will be happy to travel to your destination with thousand of dollars worth of equipment.

When you hire someone local to your destination you will not have to pay for travel and accommodation which will make a big difference to your budget. It would also be beneficial to hire a local as they will know the venue and the different locations to take photographs. Your biggest problem will not be able to meet them beforehand.

Your biggest problem is that you will not be able to meet them face to face before the wedding unless you are arriving at your venue a couple of days early and you can arrange a meeting. Remember however that technology these days is so advanced and if your photographer has the equipment then you could arrange for a meeting via a web cam or long distance call so that you can at least get the opportunity to discuss things with them yourself and get to know then a little bit.

Firstly, with the technology available today there are ways of communicating easily over large distances. You can hold meetings via the telephone or even make use of web cams, this way you can get a bit of a feel for the person. Make sure that you still get recommendations from the venues and from various wedding planning professionals who have used the photographer’s services before. Even though they don’t know you personally they will still give you their honest opinion.

You will need to see some examples of their work to make sure that you are satisfied with the quality and that they are familiar with the photographic style that you would like for your images. If they have a website then you will be able to view their portfolio there. Otherwise they should be willing to send you a CD or even an email to allow you to get a feel for their work.

Tell them before hand exactly what you are looking for so that they can cater exactly to your needs and make sure that they can give you exactly what you want.

Because your wedding is going to be somewhere wonderful and you will be there for more than just the day of your wedding, if budget allows, work some weekend or honeymoon coverage into your photography package, this way you will be able to capture the Holiday as a whole and will have the most amazing photographs of your special day.
