Is Your Anger Out Of Control?

By Peter Dawson | Jul 23, 2009

Do you get angry sometimes? We all get angry sometimes, and that’s ok. Anger is programmed into all of us as a preconditioned response to various stressful situations. But for some anger can be a real problem, and they may be in need of some anger management techniques.

Like many emotions, anger can get out of control. It can become overpowering and get way beyond normal bounds. And this may have happened to you. But if you are finding that our anger is getting out of control it can damage your life in so many different ways.

It can lead to all sorts of unusual behavior. There are so many ways that someone suffering from uncontrolled anger can manifest that. Some are obvious like shouting, but some are not so obvious. For example it can lead to behavior like short temperedness, sullenness, withdrawal into oneself, chronic grumpiness and overt aggression when dealing with other people.

And there can be way more serious manifestations like violence and threats of violence to other people including the sufferers family, loved ones and children. When anger reaches this stage it is way out of control and something has to be done about it.

And this can lead to all sorts of more serious life problems like the breakdown of relationships with family and friends, loneliness and resentment and withdrawal. Life can become a burden and there can be even more serious problems than this.

And it’s not only the life of the anger sufferer that can be at risk, but the overall health as well. There is evidence to suggest that excessive anger can, over time, lead to all sorts of health problems including depression, digestive problems, heart problems, headaches, anxiety and some other related psychological problems, high blood pressure, stroke, skin problems, insomnia and more. Scary isn’t it?

And of course an episode is unpredictable, and there is nothing you can do about the event that triggers it. Everyone suffers the usual life setbacks and frustrations. There’s nothing you can do to avoid them, they will happen to you. For some people they feel frustrated and angry, but over time that subsides and they carry on with life.

But even though stressful and frustrating events can happen the problem isn’t the event, it’s your reaction to them. You can’t change the event, but you can change your reaction.

Your reaction is totally within your control. That doesn’t mean that right now, understanding this, you can suddenly control yourself. But it does offer hope that there is something you can do if you know what, and how.

There are anger management techniques available that allow you to control your reaction to these stressful events. Not everyone can immediately take control of their lives with some simple techniques, some need professional counseling, but many can.

But the good news is that once you take the decision to recognize the problem and get started working on it there are good techniques that you can employ to get the problem under control.

I offer an anger management book on my website full of anger management tips.
