If You Think Wedding Showers are Hard To Plan Then Read This

By Aaron Hu | Jun 14, 2009

Ah, the bridal shower. This party is one of the most coveted celebrations in the wedding season. Mainly, it’s because the bride can expect many wonderful gifts from her friends and family, and the best part is that they’re all for her, unlike the wedding presents that she must share. There is, however, one catch-the bride must give something in return. This fair and simple concept strikes fear in the hearts of many future wives and maids of honor. What if her bridal shower favors look cheap and ugly? What if they’re completely inappropriate? What if her friends nod and smile while they’re there, then throw her favors into the trash the minute they arrive home? There’s no need to be afraid; this article will show you how to throw a shower that will leave your guests with a keepsake they’ll love and the word “Wow!” on their lips.

The theme for the bridal shower can help set the tone for everything else at the party. Choose something simple, like a color or a season. Blue is nice, as is springtime. Make sure the napkins and plates reflect the theme. Maybe even the food itself can match-hot dogs and hamburgers for summer, or macaroni and cheese, tumeric chicken and crookneck squash for the color yellow.

Is the guest list complete? Granted, the wedding shower may not be as exclusive as the wedding itself, but you’ll want a good idea of who’s coming and who’s not. If a guest asks to bring someone that you don’t know, you have the right to say no. After all, it’s your party. On the other hand, the more people that show up, the more fun you’ll have.

Ding dong! Your guests have arrived! What will you feed them? As mentioned before, the food can definitely match the theme of the bridal shower, but be sensible. Food that has been dyed an unnatural color can often be unappetizing. It’s safe to say that most people will not be interested in a hummus dip that is a yellowish green. Also, be aware of food allergies. Ask ahead of time, or post signs listing ingredients in the dish. If your main dish contains shrimp and your sister’s best friend is allergic, she may be in for a less than pleasant time at your party. And that, of course, would defeat the purpose.

The favors themselves are the easiest part of the shower. Again, you can match them to your theme. Or make it personal for your guests by giving them something that they can use. Your chef friend could probably use a set of measuring spoons, and your cousin the sewing goddess might like that retractable measuring tape. Don’t just buy the favor and leave it on the table; wrap it nicely and include a note that tells them why you thought they might like this gift. Your guests will deeply appreciate your thoughtfulness and effort.

Will you play games at your shower? Bridal games are some of the most creative and resourceful types of amusement in existence. You can play games that use nothing more than your imagination (the “finish the saying” game), your sense of smell (the “Herb or Spice?” game) or your clothespins (the “Forbidden Words” game). None of these examples require a great deal of preparation or money. Your guests, however, will love playing each and every one.

Wedding showers don’t have to be difficult to plan. Imagination, creativity and common sense are key. Look around; there are so many resources available that before you know it, you’ll be throwing the best party ever.
