Five Defenses Why You Must Go To Church

By Joseph Atta-Fynn | Nov 22, 2009

Your family went to church every Sunday and sometimes on Wednesday nights but it’s been decades since you’ve been back to church. Now you’re feeling guilty. Your kids don’t’ know the Lord’s Prayer and think the Walls of Jericho is a war movie. You’re feeling drawn to that building at the end of your block with the steeple and stained glass windows. Should you go back to church and rediscover that soft, spiritual side? Experts say, yes!

Fear of death: Christians believe their faith in Jesus assures them a place in heaven. As we age, we come to realize that we are not the immortal beings we thought we were in our youth. The older we get, the more we cling to the hope that there is life after death, a notion reinforced in church.

Faith helps us deal with grief: Who do you turn to in a time of extreme sorrow? God doesn’t have all the answers but we can open a Bible and find words of comfort in a time of despair and anguish. Going back to church and reconnecting with God we remember that for everything there is a time and a purpose. The church offers immense comfort.

Seek and ye shall find: Rejecting the God of their parents and the doctrines of their parent’s church, rebellious 20-somethings often launch their own spiritual journey. Often, they find that the truth they’re seeking was right under the nose, or their knees, all the time. They return to the comfort and care of a loving congregation, where the prayer is genuine, the message uplifting and the God, truly loving.

Great music: A 75-year-old man once admitted that he came to church just for the music. The organist was classically trained and on special occasions, would bring in members of the local philharmonic orchestra to embellish the regular repertoire of Sunday hymns. Good worship music is incredibly uplifting

Faith is part of us: As very impressionable children, sitting on our parent’s lap in church, we were like little sponges soaking up the word of God. We may have rejected everyone once we grew up, but truth sticks with you. With maturity comes the realization that our parents were pretty smart people, and taking us to church was an act of love. The roots of faith are deep within us. Going back to church is the water and nourishment we need to grow.
