Don’t Divorce Over A House

By Kevin Forcey | Dec 10, 2009

There are few experiences in anyones life that can be more stressful than buying your own house. After all, it seems to be the leading purchase most people will be making in their lives. Due to the fact that the real estate market has changed so spectacularly in the last few years, the home buying process is even more stressful now than it has been previously. The red tape, paperwork and increase in regulations can be fairly complicated to go through.

Because of these factors, the stress will sometimes amplify issues in your home relationships if you are not careful. Plenty of couples find that they begin disagreeing more often throughout the home purchasing process because of all of the nerve-racking choices that have to be made.

Lots of couples start fighting early on in the process over things like which house to choose. This can be a real problem because you on no account want one partner to “win” and the other to “lose”. Finding compromise can be really difficult when it comes to buying something as important as a condo.

Often, couples also battle about what to tender and what specific terms to ask for in the purchase tender. Quite often, you will be dealing with a partner who wants to act as a deal maker and negotiate in a hard ball kind of way. The other husband only wishes to buy the house, and does not want the deal maker other half to screw it up. Sadly, real estate agents time and again find themselves stuck in the middle of this squabble because they end up having no choice but to decide on a side.

No matter what the situation, you need to remember that your relationship is far more important than any house could be. Getting a home to enjoy as a family should never split your relationship apart because that makes the whole process useless. Couples must take enormous care in making sure that they talk about these issues, listen to one another and compromise where it is possible. This will ensure a much happier home when the closing is over and the moving trucks are leaving.
