Breaking Through The Walls Of Low Self Esteem

All of us are human and therefore flawed, but some of us don’t allow those flaws to define who we are, while others can’t help but self-loathe regularly. If you feel low self esteem is keeping you tethered to an unsatisfying cycle of the blues, then it’s time to start making some changes. Therapy can be helpful but so can some adjustments in your daily life.

Even though old habits die hard, anyone can shift their outlook on things with a little bit of persistence and mindfulness. Try to employ some of the ideas below as a diving board toward a better sense of self and happiness.

1. Train yourself to stop thinking negatively.

This is simply a behavioral approach. Each time you feel yourself thinking something that makes you sad or anxious, take a moment, pull out a pen and paper, and mark it as part of a log. The logic is that you’re training yourself to recognize negative thoughts and then actively stopping them by taking the time to make a record of it. As a few weeks pass, you’ll see something very strange. The number of negative thoughts will go down. You’ll notice that they will become infrequent.

2. Have fun.

By indulging in activities that make us happy, we are stimulating seratonin. There’s no mathematical equation for this. Just think about how good you feel when you’re reading a good book, or painting. Doing something you enjoy doesn’t require beating yourself down and the more you participate in pleasant activities, the better you will feel about yourself.

3. Dump the toxic friends.

You know who they are. Some people in the world make it a past time to complain and be cynical, look at the glass as perpetually half empty. Maybe you engaged these people because you had things in common, but if you want to move on and put on a positive spin your self esteem, keeping these people around won’t help. Focus on the people who seem happy with themselves and their lot in life. It’s contagious.
