Are Couples Happier Being Married Under The K1 Visa?

By Art Saborio | Mar 20, 2010

What’s the K1 Visa?

Let me pause before I proceed further, I will explain what this type of Visa is all about. The Visa K1 will permit a U.S. national the right to bring their potential spouse into the U.S.A for marriage. Once in the U.S., the couple will have just 90 days to get married and exhibit evidence of the wedding through an interview process. Since the time frame to get married is inside a 90 day window, a large amount couples by-pass the normal church wedding and opt for the justice of the peace. Other couples will use the justice of the peace as their lawful obligation and then have the church wedding afterwards. In a nutshell this is what the Visa is all about.

Success rate of an international marriage There is a common misconception that the rate of a successful marriage is better from those that marry someone from another country under a K1 Visa. Marriage alone is hard enough, yet for those entering in the USA on a Visa K1 can be much more challenging. Add in cultural differences, language barriers, loss of friends, loss of family and the feeling of completely starting over and that can add up to a heavy toll on the marriage and the relationship. Now add in the factor that you don?t really know each other very well and that may be the breaking point.

But there’s a silver lining to this complex situation. A rate of success can greatly improve if both learn each other?s culture, try to learn a little of each other?s language. Maybe take an interest in the hobbies of one another. Above all be patient with each other. Listen to each others concerns.

Foreign spouse tend to not lose their patience as easily as their male counterparts. She may be slow to learn the language or depressed. All this can lead to the male not feeling he is being appreciated by him new wife. He has provided all these things for her and he feels that she does not care. In reality she is very grateful. It is the drastic change in culture and loss of family and friends that can lead to an unhappy spouse.

The good news is this will go away within 6 months to a year and the new wife will start to get use to her new surroundings. She will start to work, drive and make new friends. This will all lead to her feeling independent again. Her use of the language will get better and the concerns of the past will be only a memory.

Based on my understanding of the success rate of marriages for those entering the USA on a K1 Visa, they are equivalent to those in the U.S. It all comes down to how well you communicate and how much patience you have with each other. If you have those two qualities nailed down, there is a very high probability that your international relationship and marriage will succeed.

As with anything that you find in life, everything good comes with some effort. In a marriage and especially in an international relationship, that work becomes a little bit harder. Don?t full yourself in thinking that all you need to do is meet your potential spouse once in his or her country and then go off and live happily ever after. Those kinds of romances only happen in the movies.

I often traveled every 6 months to visit my wife in the Ukraine. We took trips together and really got to know each other before we start thinking about marriage. It is a learning process and the more you know the more successful your marriage will be.
