Planning With Your Special Day Minister

By Dr. David Trumble | Nov 3, 2009

What should you expect from your special days Officiate ?

You may use a public official, a Priest , or someone else to do your wedding, but whoever you choose they must be qualified according to state law.

Why do weddings have to be controlled by legal and governmental regulations?

Marriage is a legal status defined, regulated, and certified by state law. Two individuals agree to a binding social contract which involves management of assets, child custody, and personal obligations. The event is essentially the execution of the marriage contract, and therefore must be officiated by an approved government representative and registered in the state or county record.

Uncle Joe cannot legally perform your event in most states unless he is an ordained Preacher . The state vests legal authority in selected religious and civil leaders to perform weddings. These state laws dictate part of the standards for officiating, but the professional’s connection with their religious or governmental organization must also stipulate the right to perform weddings. Essentially, this is achieved when a Cleric ed is ordained by his church or denomination.

The Cleric serves as a representative of the government as well as his respective organization. He may represent a church, synagogue, or a other religious organization. Or he may represent a civil organization. In all cases, the officiate must also represent the state and be authorized by the state to legally perform a wedding.

Beyond officiating a event ceremony, most Preacher s are also provide additional support and services to the bridal couple. The Preacher may serve as a pre-marriage counselor, a pre-wedding teacher, a event ceremony planner, special days organizer, officiate of rehearsal and ceremony, a participant in the reception, and often a marriage counselor following the wedding. Some Minister s require specified things from the bridal couple, while others limit their involvements to those things requested by the couple.

When it comes to choosing a wedding Minister , you need to take great care. Since wedding Officiate s represent both the government and their respective religious organization, you need to make sure that your chosen wedding Cleric ’s religious perspectives at least mesh with your own. If you are Jewish, you may be unhappy with a Baptist event Priest . Ask yourself, what religious traditions best fit your own perspectives. Then contact a few event Preacher s to find one with whom you feel comfortable. Personality, flexibility, religious perspective, requirements of the couple, and availability are all significant consideration.

At your initial meeting with your wedding Cleric , find out what to expect from the ceremony, Cleric , and associated details. The Preacher may have certain requirements that you will need to understand and perform. Your goal is to establish a good working relationship.

Do you want to write your own vows or have your wedding Minister take care of the details? Do you want a creative and flexible Preacher ? Do you need someone to coddle you and protect you? Your event Preacher can help you achieve your goals.

How much do you pay your Officiate ? Yes, that assumes you will pay him. Too often couples overlook this vital step in arranging for their Preacher . How much does he charge? What is the right amount to pay?

If you have a Justice of the Peace or a court officer officiate your wedding, the state or local government may set the fee. If you are scheduling to use a church facility, your use of the building may include the services of the Preacher . In most cases, however, it is customary for the Best Man to actually deliver the honorarium to the Preacher .

If you are skimping on your wedding, plan to pay your Officiate at least 10% of the total you spend on your event and reception combined. If you are planning a mid-sized or larger wedding, the percentage may decrease a little. Some Preacher s, simplify the issue for you by charging a set fee of $400 to $1,000.

Your wedding Cleric is like an archbishop or king at your wedding. He sets the tone and establishes order. He makes the whole ceremony work. Get the best from your event Preacher and look to him for solutions.
