Whitening Your Teeth the Safe Way

By Jack Shepard | Aug 5, 2009

Any teeth whitening procedures are safe as long as it is done correctly. Anything that involves stripping the enamel from your teeth is not safe as this is not how safe teeth whitening is practiced. If you choose to strip your teeth of enamel you will probably notice that they will turn a yellow color instead of looking whiter.

Using a hard tooth toothbrush to bleach your teeth is not recommended either. This is because you can actually cause damage to your gums if you are too vigorous, especially when using a hard bristled toothbrush. There are literally hundreds of tooth whitening products on the market, but with any of them you should use a soft bristled brush for a gentler clean, and one which won’t cause any damage to your gums.

When you start shopping around for a suitable teeth whitening product, you ought to check through the list of ingredients carefully to try and make sure that there are no abrasives in it. The reason is that abrasives have been known to damage teeth and/or gums, so you should try and avoid this sort of product wherever possible. Check with the store personnel or your online supplier if you are in any doubt. Most products on sale today use safe chemicals rather then abrasives, and these are the products that we recommend you use.

Whitening your teeth in a safe manner is important. Rather than risk any accidents, you should talk to your dentist for advice; better still ask your dentist to do it for you. He/she will be an expert and it is well worth paying them that little extra, but ending up with beautifully white teeth without any side effects or discoloration.

Teeth whitening is not something that you have to do from a medical point of view, it is purely cosmetic. It doesn’t have to be very expensive though. If your dentist doesn’t offer that service, he/she will be able to recommend you to an appropriate clinic. Getting a recommendation is the best way to choose a teeth whitening clinic because you are going on the back of someone else’s experience, and people work hard to protect a good reputation.

Should you feel that the cost of using a special clinic, or even your own dentist, is going to be too expensive, there are plenty of over the counter treatments on general sale. You’ll find them on sale at a pharmacy, or the pharmaceutical department of your local supermarket, or of course online. You may have to try a few different brands before finding one that you feel is best for you.

One piece of advice though. Don’t go for the cheaper products. You may well discover that some of the cheaper brands contain abrasives, and bearing in mind what we advised earlier, give these a miss. Instead you should look for the products that contain safe teeth whitening chemicals. Using this sort of product will not only get you the best results, but it will also be your safest option; and even if you have to pay a little extra, it’s well worth it to guarantee a safe result.

Choose a safe teeth whitening procedure and you are sure to come out smiling and showing off those lovely new white teeth. It is important for you to look after your teeth. As an adult your real teeth cannot be replaced, so look after them!
