Tantra is a very old Eastern philosophy. Its origins in fact go right back over 7000 years ago to India. The word ‘tantra’ is composed of two different Sanskrit words – Tanoi, meaning to expand something and Trayati, meaning to liberate something. The purpose of Tantra California is thus to expand your personality, to let it grow, until eventually it can be liberated from suffering.
Westerners are usually more familiar with yoga than Tantra. Interestingly enough though, many historians actually believe that yoga was developed by practitioners of Tantra many centuries ago. This was not the yoga we often find in the West consisting of a series of mind boggling poses, but a holistic philosophy encompassing meditation, breathing techniques and using sexuality as a tool to enhance communication between two partners.
Tantra is, however, much more than yoga. It’s certainly also not just about sex. It’s about a holistic approach to life, where your mind, body and spirit are all in perfect harmony to create a completely liberated human being.
Ancient Tantra teachings hold that struggle forms an essential part of all human life. In this respect there is agreement with Buddhism. There are various stages involves in our journey from struggle to liberation. It all starts with the stage where we are controlled by our baser instincts. As you learn to control these instincts, you pass to the higher level, known as human development. Through further struggle and perseverance you eventually reach the final stage, where you will be whole and godlike.
Where Tantra therefore differs from other Eastern philosophies, such as Buddhism, is how to proceed from a state where you are controlled by animal instincts to one where you have been liberated. While Buddhism for example teaches that the path to enlightenment goes through detaching yourself completely from worldly desires, Tantra argues that desires are part and parcel of what makes us human. To deny desire is to deny your human identity.
According to the Tantric doctrine, to deny your desires therefore means to suppress them. And to suppress something as natural as desire will eventually lead to all sorts of psychological problems and even physical illness. That is why Tantra accepts sexual desire as part of being a holistic human being.
Sex is however not the goal, it’s simply one of the tools to reach the goal. The ultimate goal remains self fulfillment, reaching a level of physical, spiritual and mental balance. Connecting with your partner on a physical level is however an important part of this growth process. Tantra California is therefore not just a set of practices – everything has a purpose in the journey to become a complete human being.
