Compounds that initiate instinctive responses from members of the same species are called pheromones. These pheromones result in changes in behavior and hormone levels. Human pheromones are believed to have several effects and purposes.
Most studies about pheromones have to do with a woman’s menstrual cycle and how they coordinate with other women’s menstrual cycles through undetected odors that the body sends out during this time. Exposure to the sweat of another woman, that was collected during different times of the month, was done to the women in the group.
This research showed that menstrual cycles were affected according to when the samples of sweat were collected throughout the month. It was believed at the time that two pheromones were needed for the process that resulted. One for lengthen and one for shortening ovulation. Results of this research have recently been questioned as to their accuracy.
The armpit of a male is thought to be a source of pheromones as well. Studies have shown that women who suffer from irregular menstrual cycles may have their cycles become more regular if the women are exposed to male underarm extracts. They theorized that sweat from males contains pheromones.
Androstadienone that can be found in a males sweat includes higher amounts of cortisol in women. The nose detects this chemical substance. This particular substance is believed to effect the opposite sexes endocrine balance.
Studies have also shown that a certain chemical in women’s perfume increases the likelihood of intimate contact with males. Suggestions that this study is flawed have also surfaced.
The attraction of a mate that one is not related to may be possible because of a connection with the immune system and pheromones. Research shows the possibility of two distinctive smells being created by the body that cause the brain in homosexual and heterosexual men to respond differently.
It is believed that these pheromones are related to sexual stimulation and that men who are homosexual respond like a heterosexual woman would to this exposure. When homosexual women were added to the study, the findings of the second study were consistent with the first study. In other words, sexual orientation may be directly related to pheromones.
Body sprays or perfumes that contain these pheromones are meant to be aphrodisiacs and there is research available that proves beyond question that pheromones attract a mate.
